'Black Lives Matter' Writing competition - Year 5

Well done to all of those who entered the 'Black Lives Matter' Writing competition a few weeks ago. These are the entries we received from Years 5 and 6 students, who really thought about the subject and wrote some very thought provoking pieces.

Here are some examples from Year 5 -

We’re All Human

“Hey Samantha! You're looking stupid, as always.” Carl, one of Samantha’s bullies, stated, hoping it would upset her.
“Go away, Carl. You making fun of me isn't going to bring me down, so quit it.” Samantha pushed Carl out of her way.
“You’re just a black loser with no friends, you shouldn’t even be here!” Alex, another one of Sam’s bullies, stepped in. “Stop trying to act cool, because you’re not! You disgust me, you weirdo.”
“What did you just call me?! Now you’ve crossed the line! Do NOT call me a loser!” Sam screamed, shoving both bullies to the floor. “You think that you can just stroll up to me and treat me that way?! NO, I’ve had enough!”
“Samantha! How dare you bully those poor kids! Go to the Headteacher, NOW!” Mrs Murphy, a racist teacher, stormed outside and screamed at Sam. Annoyed, Samantha stomped to the Headteacher’s office and knocked on the door.
“Come in.” Mrs Robin called from the other side of the door. “Oh hello, Samantha. Take a seat.” Embarrassed, Sam sat down with her head hung low. “So, why have you come to see me?” she asked, smiling.
“I may have pushed two people on the floor.. I have a good reason, though!” she confessed. “I only pushed them because they bully me 24/7. I may have lost my temper and started shouting and screaming at them.” she buried her head in her hands, hoping she wouldn’t get in trouble.
“Who mistreated you? Although you shouldn’t have let out your anger on them, you were standing up for yourself. To be honest, I would regret giving you a punishment for being confident.” she smiled kindly at Samantha.
“Their names are-”
“SAMANTHA!!!!! How DARE you bully these boys! Shame on you!!” Mrs Murphy interrupted, slammed the door open leading Carl and Alex into the room.
“Excuse me, Mrs Murphy. Would you mind standing outside while me and Samantha finish our conversation?” Mrs Robin softly suggested.
“No, I most certainly will not! That horrible, disgusting girl needs to be taught a lesson for hurting these innocent gentlemen!” she dragged Samantha off the chair and onto the floor. “This child is cruel, selfish, and ignorant! She doesn’t deserve to have luxury in an expensive and fancy school!”

When school ended, Samantha had bruises and marks everywhere. All she wanted to do was to cry. While she was walking home, she came across Sienna, her little sister, leaning against a brick wall crying. “Sienna?! What happened?!” Sam worriedly carried her sister back home, hoping she wasn’t badly hurt. “Tell me what happened, Sienna…” she asked, placing the fragile girl on the grey sofa.
“It hurts, everywhere…” Sienna whispered. After Samantha took care of Sienna, someone knocked on the door. It was Alex.
“What do you want?”
“I’m sorry for how I treated you, please forgive me.” Alex begged.
“Fine… I forgive you. Just, don’t do it again, okay?”
“I won’t, I promise…”
The End...

ALL LIVES MATTER
Alfie was walking home from school like every other day. Running around on his phone living his dreams like a normal boy. Alfie lives with his mum dad and sister well he was living with his mum until she sadly passed away from suffering cancer she tried to fight it but every day. After their mum died .Dad [chris] got them a bull terrier to protect them. All of a sudden someone knocked on the door they got their dog just in case. Alfie opened the door it was Tom, Jack and Bill. They took Alfie without Chris or Courtney knowing.

They took Alfie behind the abandoned house where nobody would dare to go. They went with their  dog, Snuffles.   After running  they  had the most anxious fight that Alfie had ever done before. They bullied him near the river. Alfies tactic was that he would throw them into the river to buy him some more time to fight. He could see the clouds in the background it was going to pour down with rain and thunder. After fighting every one of them, one by one, then they all climbed out of the  horrible  river like zombies coming out of a gravestone. Then Snuffles came into action like a 10000 mile per hour car. He came in faster than a rocket, faster than a 4000 mile per hour plane - he was like a lightning bolt .Then the bullies ran away crying to their mum, all sad. Alfie and Snuffles ran out of there before they called the police. Soon after running they got lost in an abandoned town from the 1900s, nobody was here just yet. They looked around, looking through all of the old  stuff and junk they had,-there were lots of the old game boys. Then they found that there were other footsteps and they weren't Alfie’s. Then they saw that there wasn’t the three boys, it was someone from school, it was Billy, one of Alfie’s best friends from school .Suddenly we saw that the three boys, Tom, Jack and Bill were ready for round two. This time Alfie had his best mate next to him. And they had Sniffles the world's most vicious dog ever, he could bite you and you would drop down to the floor in a crying pain - it would be dreadful - at least a couple trips to the hospital.

Then they realized just because Alfie is a different skin colour doesn't mean they have to fight. They all realised that they should make the world a better place and that they should do an assembly about it at school. So they told everybody at school and they did really well now they will break up any fights even if it is a normal fight they learned about racism and that you shouldn't be mean or call anyone names or be rude we should all be treated the same.  ALL LIVES MATTER.

Racism is when a person hurts or offends another person because they have different colour skin. Let’s give an example. A young black boy called Dejon was walking along the pavement, listening to music when a gang of young white lads started to follow him. They gave him dirty looks and mumbled amongst themselves.  Dejon looked behind him and backed up because he knew what was coming. This had happened many times before on the estate where he lived.
‘Oh, here we go again,’ he thought to himself. He knew he was about to be bullied because he was different! The gang walked a little faster to catch up with him.

Dejon was a lovely boy at the age of 19 ½. He would always take care of his 8year-old sister because his mum was extremely ill with cancer. She would always lay in bed watching TV waiting for Dejon to bring her food up, most of the time. He would take her to the park, make them dinner, play with Keira (his sister) and just take care of her overall. (And himself, of course).

He ran home and locked all of the windows and doors to protect him and his mum and sister. He ran up to his bedroom window to see if the gang were still outside. All he saw was the beautiful lake in the distance but no mean gang. He mumbled to himself “I’ll just go and make dinner and try to forget about it.” He went downstairs and made some halloumi kebabs served with a salad involving spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, radish, cress and mayonnaise on the side. He gave it to his sister and there they were, peering in the window, was the group of teenagers staring at Dejon. Keira gave them all a dirty look and counted how many there were waiting to fight. She counted four people.  Dejon built up his courage to go out and fight.
Keira said “I’m really worried about you, Dejon. I want to see if you are OK. Therefore, I want to watch from the doorway.”
Dejon nodded. “Ok.”
They both snuck outside and got ready to potentially get really hurt… They got into a vicious fight. Dejon was really trying to keep himself and his family safe. He finally stopped and stood still, bleeding.  He tried to convince them that people should be treated the same way, not differently just because of the skin they were born wearing! He was trying to reason with them but they just wouldn’t listen… all apart from one of the gang, David.  He knew what they were doing was wrong.  He felt uncomfortable.  He began to hear what Dejon was trying to say. David knew what it was like to be picked on.  He had a sister who was disabled.  Some of the people at school were really mean to his sister and to him too.  It wasn’t his sister’s fault that she was different.  It wasn’t David’s either. This made him think.

David moved next to Dejon and said ”He is right. We are treating them badly just because they look different to us. He didn’t choose his skin colour just like I didn’t choose mine. One of the boys decided that he was right. He moved next to Dejon and admitted, “We need to stop.” They all stopped agreed. They all became friends after and decided to help stop racism. The end.

The moral of the story is that people should be treated the same way no matter what.
