Extracting Strawberry DNA in Year 6 Science

 In Science this week as part of our Year Six Topic - Darwin's Delight - we have been extracting the DNA from strawberries.


😃Kaycee: I enjoyed science this week especially when the teacher added the surgical spirit and the D.N.A. appeared for the first time, it looked like slime.


😃Holly: I really liked it when we extracted the D.N.A. from the strawberry mixture, out teacher Mrs. Marshall explained how forensic scientists and doctors can do the same with human D.N.A.  




😃Oliver M: I was surprised with how quickly the surgical spirit reacted with the strawberry mixture, it took immediate effect and I could see the D.N.A. as I mixed it with the lollipop stick.


😃Alfie :I found out that humans have some of the same D.N.A. as strawberries.

😄Lyla: Seeing D.N.A. was such a surprise, I never knew that it is sometimes called the 'Code for Life'.




😄Elliot: I loved the science enquiry this week as I never knew that strawberries had D.N.A.WOW!

 It has been a great start to our adventures at Stubbers!  We went on a nature trail around a large lake, that we will be using later on today for water sports activities. We even managed to find some exciting equipment to play on along the way.  We are now eating our lunch, and getting ready for the fun this afternoon.  Keep checking for exciting updates!

What a great first day at Stubbers

After lunch, we all started our first activities. We all got to go on a climbing wall, with many of us reaching the top. We also got to try open canoeing or double kayaking, even though it was meant to be fairly dry activity many of us managed to get nice and wet. After our activities we found our tents for the next couple of days and then had our dinner, it was a very tasty bolognaise with fruit for pudding.  We are now waiting for our evening activity, the mini Olympics, then time for some well earned rest.  We will keep you updated in the morning. Another exciting morning at Stubbers

 This morning, we have been able to try out lots of new activities, including paddleboarding, a team challenge, archery and combat archery. Everyone has got involved and had great fun.  I am sure that everyone is looking forward to their lunch and their afternoon activities   We will keep you updated later on, remember keep checking in!
