Y5 History - Oracle Bones

Y5 History

This week in Y5 History we have been learning about Oracle Bones and we made factual posters to explain what they are. So what are they?

The earliest Chinese writing comes from 3,500 years ago, when China was ruled by the Shang dynasty. Archaeologists were very excited when they found thousands of cow bones and turtle shells covered with writing. 'They called them Oracle Bones. The oracle bones were used to ask questions of the gods and ancestors. Priests or the king wrote the questions onto the bone, then made holes on the reverse, which was heated.

The priests interpreted the resulting cracks in the bone as answers to their questions.
